Why Google Drive alone is hard for wedding guests
Google Drive is designed around the account that owns the folder. A guest who wants to drop photos straight into your Drive has to be invited by email, sign into a Google account on their phone, and often install or update the Drive app before the upload starts. On a wedding day, that sequence is the difference between hundreds of photos and a handful of polite tries.
Shared Drive links add their own friction. Public upload-enabled links are restricted on consumer accounts, link expiry rules change, and guests who scan a link on a cracked phone screen frequently land on a Google sign-in wall instead of an upload page. Older relatives are the most likely to give up at that step.
The other Drive limitation is curation. When dozens of guests upload directly, you receive every blurry burst frame, every accidental screen recording, and every duplicate. There is no approval queue, no per-table grouping, no way to hide files until you have reviewed them. Galeira is built to remove all of that friction at the guest layer while still putting the approved originals into your Drive at the end.

How Galeira makes Drive uploads guest-friendly
Galeira sits between the guest phone and your Google Drive. You connect Drive once during event setup. Galeira creates a dedicated folder inside your Drive and remembers it for the event. From that moment, guests never see Google at all.
At the event, every guest scans the same QR code. The link opens a fast mobile web page in their default browser. There is no app to install, no account to create, no Google login. They tap to add photos and videos from their camera roll, optionally enter a name, and submit. The upload runs in the browser using resumable chunks, so a flaky reception venue Wi-Fi does not lose the file.
Uploads land in Galeira first. You can review them in a moderation queue, approve the keepers, and hide anything you do not want public. Approved originals are then mirrored into the event folder in your Drive at full resolution, with the original filename, EXIF intact. If a mirror fails, Galeira retries and surfaces the status so you can see exactly which files made it.

Folder structure and backup receipt
Inside your Google Drive, Galeira creates a top-level folder named after the event, for example Galeira / Anna and Marco Wedding 2026-08-15. Approved originals sit directly inside that folder. Filenames keep the guest device's original name when present, with a short suffix to prevent collisions between two guests who both uploaded IMG_2841.jpg.
Galeira also writes a small marker file called .galeira-verify into the same folder. The marker contains the event id, the connected Drive account email, the count of mirrored files, and a hash you can match against your Galeira dashboard. It is the same idea as a checksum receipt — proof that the folder you are looking at is the live mirror destination, not a stale copy.
The backup receipt page in your Galeira dashboard pulls all of this together. It shows the connected destination, the folder path, the number of approved files, the number successfully mirrored, the number queued, and any failures with a retry button. Most hosts open the receipt the morning after the event, run one retry pass, and download the folder when the count matches.

Google Drive vs Google Photos vs Galeira
Google Drive is the right home for a folder of full-resolution wedding files that you intend to keep, archive, share with a photographer, or hand to a video editor. It preserves the original file, the filename, and the metadata. It is also the easiest place to download the whole event as a zip.
Google Photos is the right home for browsing and reliving the day. Face grouping, on-this-day surfacing, and shared albums are excellent. The trade-off is that Photos compresses by default on most plans, and its shared album upload flow still asks guests for a Google account or app.
Galeira is the guest collection layer. It is not trying to replace Drive or Photos. It removes the Google sign-in wall at the guest moment, adds moderation, and then deposits the approved originals into the destination you actually trust — typically your Drive. Many hosts later upload the same folder into Photos for the browsing experience, keeping Drive as the archival copy. Galeira does not currently advertise Google Photos as a connectable destination while OAuth verification is in progress.

Other cloud options
Google Drive is the most common destination for wedding hosts, but the Galeira mirror mechanism is identical across the other supported destinations. You connect once during setup, Galeira creates a dedicated event folder, and approved originals mirror into that folder with the same backup receipt available afterwards.
Dropbox is a strong choice for hosts already using it for the rest of the wedding paperwork — contracts, seating charts, supplier files. The folder structure mirrors the Drive layout. OneDrive is the natural pick for Microsoft 365 households and is included in many family plans, which often makes the storage cost a non-issue. Amazon S3 and any S3-compatible store (including Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, and Wasabi) are popular with photographers and tech-leaning hosts who want lifecycle rules, server-side encryption, and per-bucket access policies. WebDAV covers self-hosted setups like Nextcloud and Synology, which some families prefer for full control over the storage location.
In every case, the guest experience is unchanged — one QR, no app, no account. Only the destination behind the scenes differs.

Consent and access explained
When you connect Google Drive, Galeira requests the drive.file scope. This is the most limited write scope Google offers. Under drive.file, an application can only see and modify files that the application itself created or that the user explicitly opens with it. Galeira cannot list, read, or touch anything else in your Drive — not the rest of your files, not other folders, not shared drives outside the event folder.
When you approve the consent screen, Galeira creates the event folder and from then on only writes inside that folder. If you decline the consent or grant a narrower partial permission, Galeira cannot write files to Drive at all and the dashboard will surface a clear permission error rather than silently failing.
You can revoke access at any time from your Google Account security page, under Third-party apps with account access. Revoking immediately stops new mirrors. Files that already mirrored stay in your Drive because they live in your account, not ours. The connection can be re-authorised later from the Galeira destinations page if you want to resume mirroring.

Back up originals to a cloud you already own.
Galeira stores the event gallery so guests can view and download it, but the important part is ownership. When you connect a cloud destination, approved originals mirror to a place you control: Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, or WebDAV. The backup-status page shows what copied, what is pending, and what needs attention.
External cloud-provider outages and account deletions are outside Galeira's control — which is exactly why the receipt matters. You can verify, retry, and export while your archive is active.
Questions hosts ask before they create the QR
Do guests need a Google account to upload?
No. Guests scan the QR code, the link opens in their phone's browser, and they upload directly from there. There is no Google sign-in, no app install, and no account creation step on the guest side.
What Google Drive permissions does Galeira request?
Galeira requests the drive.file scope, which is the narrowest Drive write scope. Under this scope, Galeira can only see and modify files it created itself inside the event folder. It cannot read, list, or modify anything else in your Drive.
Can I disconnect Drive after the event?
Yes. You can disconnect from the Galeira destinations page or revoke access directly in your Google Account under Third-party apps with account access. Revoking stops new mirrors immediately, and files already mirrored remain in your Drive because they live in your account.
Where in my Drive will the photos appear?

What if I run out of Drive storage?
Mirroring pauses when your Drive is full, and the backup receipt surfaces a clear storage error rather than silently dropping files. You can free space, upgrade your Google One plan, or switch destinations to Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, or WebDAV, then retry the queued mirrors from the receipt page.
Does Galeira copy to Drive in real time?
Approved originals are queued for mirroring as soon as you approve them in the moderation tab. In practice the file appears in your Drive folder within a minute on a healthy connection. The backup receipt shows queued, mirrored, and failed counts so you always see the current state.
Can the photographer access the Drive folder?
Yes. The event folder is a normal folder in your Drive, so you can share it with your photographer, videographer, or family members using Google Drive's standard sharing controls. Galeira does not need to be involved in that share — it is between you and the people you invite.
What happens if a photo fails to mirror?
Failed mirrors are listed individually on the backup receipt with the reason — permission, storage, network, or rate limit. A retry button re-runs the mirror for those specific files. The original always remains stored on Galeira until the mirror succeeds, so a failure never means a lost photo.
Is there a backup receipt I can verify?
Yes. Every event has a backup receipt page that shows the connected destination, folder path, the .galeira-verify marker, and the live counts of approved, mirrored, queued, and failed files. You can also download a CSV of mirrored filenames for your own records.
Can I use Google Photos instead?
Galeira does not currently offer Google Photos as a connectable destination while OAuth verification is in progress. Most hosts use Drive as the mirror destination and then upload the folder to Google Photos themselves afterwards if they want face grouping and the shared album experience.
