A quinceañera is the Mexican fifteenth-birthday celebration that turns one girl's transition into adulthood into a full ceremonial day. It's not a small thing. The court of honour, the changing of the shoes, the father-daughter waltz, the toast — every beat of it produces a photograph someone is going to want forever.

The order of the day

Most quinceañeras start with a Catholic mass — the Misa de Acción de Gracias — followed by a reception that runs late into the night. The girl wears a formal gown (often pink, increasingly any color), and her court of damas y chambelanes accompanies her through the entire afternoon.

The choreographed waltz with her father is the emotional center of the night. The crown ceremony, where she's symbolically crowned an adult, is where the abuelas cry. The shoe ceremony, where her father swaps her flats for heels, is the photo every aunt wants on her phone.
